Hens Make Me Healthier and Happier
Dogs and cats are great too, but if you want to see some group dynamics, get chickens
Cancer knocked on my door in 2021, and I’m in year 4 of survivorship. I pay attention to my health, and after a holiday season of chocolates and prime rib, am ready to settle down to a healthier way of eating. One item on my personal menu is eggs. And because we live in the country, we keep hens.
Not just any old chickens, mind you. They are beloved pets — friends with benefits. They lay eggs. Free range chicken eggs are much healthier than the variety in the grocery store. The yolk of our hens’ eggs is a deep, saturated orange color — much richer in appearance than the light yellow-yolked factory-farm eggs. Cliff Seruntine runs a blog at Wordpress, and asserts that his free-range chickens’ eggs are far superior to battery (factory) eggs.
I appreciate his views, and heartily endorse this information, which he shares on his site:
Whatever your resources, the more you can allow your animals access to range, exercise, open grazing and scratching and rooting (whatever your animal’s preference), the better off the animal will be, the more humanely it has been raised, and the healthier will be the end product.
